UBL was an evil man and desreved death. However we should "rejoice not when your enemy falls, and let not your heart be glad when he stumbles" (Proverbs 24:17). The Church has been ignorant for far too long on this point! Jesus made it very clear in the Scriptures when He rebuked the storm, that the storms of life do not come from God but from our enemy. The storm is not there to teach you something but rather to destroy you. Thank you Neil for your clear teaching! We should not simply point out the sin and failure of Charlie Sheen, but direct their attention to the uplifting and virtuous man. Lets show them the flip side of the Charlie Sheen's and fallen sports stars, etc. of the world. Point out the virtuous men you know that glorify Jesus, that love their wives as Christ loves the Church, that raise their kids in the nurture and admonition of the Lord, and that work hard and are good stewards of what the Lord has given them. Hopefully, each one of us is modeling that behavior for them and can explain why that man is much more to be admired than the man who is famously flawed. Years ago when my older sons were teenagers we used to watch the show Survivior together. Several people in my church asked me why in the world we would watch THAT show. What I explained was that it was a perfect opportunity to teach your children about real life relational situations. We would all venture an opinion on what such and such person was going to do and what other's reactions would be to it. We would also talk about what was the proper response and what reactions we would expect from those actions. Just a few thoughts about how to deal with the media onslaught we all must try to protect our children from and turn it for their good.
