Day 7: Bound By Covenant

Proverbs 7:3

Bind them on your fingers;
write them on the tablet of your heart.

Principle

The Word of God is a covenantal relationship.

Our advisor tells us that the words and commands that he is instructing us with are to be considered a covenantal relationship – it really is a binding agreement between two parties. God’s character backs up His Word. He personally watches over the Word to see it fulfilled (Jeremiah 1:12). It’s a guarantee.

We have a role in the covenant as well – in order for the Word of God to be performed in our lives, we must be in agreement with the covenant relationship. How do we do that?

In the same manner, in which we agree in marriage, we bind our finger as a sign of the covenant, and we write the covenant or vows on our heart. Then we openly speak what we believe in our hearts (Romans 10:8). The heart is the “seat of appetites.” It is the place that we choose our cravings. When we are in a marriage, we have expressed our vows that we will be faithful to the relationship. In the same way, when we are in covenant with the Word of God, we choose the appetite of the Word over the appetite of the flesh, believing that the relationship is worth protecting and honoring.

This understanding will help us approach our relationship with the Word of God seriously and nurture that relationship to see it mature.
