Day 107: Lies From Our Leaders

Proverbs 17:7

We don’t expect eloquence from fools,
nor do we expect lies from our leaders.

Principle

Two things that we should not expect – eloquence from fools and lies from leaders.

In the 16th century, a writer, political theorist, and philosopher named Niccolo` Machiavelli wrote The Prince, in which he analyzed and revealed many political strategies that are still in use today. The term Machiavellian has become synonymous with political gaming, manipulation, and ruthless imperium. He taught leaders how to use mendacity – the artful use of double-speak to persuade, embellish, or camouflage their actions to those under their leadership. Machiavelli’s message is the complete opposite of the biblical concept of servant leadership. Amazingly, he wrote an entire chapter for those who are in leadership in the Church!

Governments are built upon trust – citizenry is placed under a leader’s dominance, and their vulnerability is subject to his entrusted power. Unfortunately, very few leaders have a balanced ego and humility to have mastery over themselves. Most succumb to the paranoia of others grasping for their rank. Some literally give themselves over to haunting psychosis – characterized by defective or lost contact with reality, especially as evidenced by delusions, hallucinations, and disorganized speech and behavior. They become liars.

We should expect truth from our leaders. We should demand that lies are held accountable. It should be a criminal offense for a  leader to purposefully and manipulatively lie to citizens.
