Day 116: The Incorrigible Fool
Proverbs 26:11
As a dog returns to its vomit, so fools repeat their folly.
Principle
Fools repeat their folly.
Albert Einstein attributed the precise definition of insanity, which is “doing the same thing over and over again and expecting different results.” That certainly applies to the simple-minded man who continues to repeat the same mistakes. A man actually only makes a mistake once because he does it the second time – it was a decision. As stupid as it might be, he repeats his stupidity.
Proverbs openly ridicule what is considered a fool. The Hebrew word for fool means stupid fellow, dullard, simpleton, arrogant one. A fool is a guy who will not learn the lessons of life or apply wisdom to his decisions.
When I was a boy, I saw a dog eat its vomit. It was so disgusting that I would never forget it. As a teenager, I saw young people making the same mistakes over and over again. Then when I became an adult, I’ve seen grown men do the same thing repeatedly. I hate to admit it, but there have been plenty of times that I’ve played the fool.
Our Advisor is not sympathetic to fools. He paints a graphic picture of his folly. We need to be able to be corrected and not repeat stupid mistakes.
Peter refers to this proverb when referencing those who have returned to their life of sin after tasting the righteousness and freedom that comes to us in Christ (2 Peter 2:22). It is a disgusting proposition for a person to literally turn from all of the good that comes to us in the Gospel and then returns to dine on the filth of sin.
