Day 143: Don’t Get Flush With Envy

Proverbs 23:17

Do not let your heart envy sinners, but always be zealous for fear of the Lord.
There is surely a future hope for you, and your hope will not be cut off.

Principle

You always move toward what you’re focused upon.

Sometimes it appears that sinners are living it up and enjoying life. If we’re not careful, we will see a small portion of a person’s life and think that they really have it working for them. At times, it could be difficult not to envy these guys.

A picture of the word – envy – is the flush redness in the face after your emotions have boiled up. It’s when you’ve seen someone with stuff that you want, and you become jealous and burn with zeal about it.

At the core of envy is a measure of unbelief – a person begins to judge others and wonder why God hasn’t blessed them with that measure of life and substance.

Our Advisor tells us to stop looking at sinners and turn our emotional energy and desire for the things of God – that’s where our hope and future are. When you trust God, you won’t find yourself worrying about what others have and how they got it.

Bounce your eyes away from looking at others and focus on the hope of the future.
