Day 147: The Seat of Appetites
Proverbs 27:7
A person who is full refuses honey, but even bitter food tastes sweet to the hungry.
Principle
You can’t conquer the world without first denying your own appetite.
Isaac had twin sons – Esau who was born first and Jacob who grasped the heel of his brother. Esau was a man’s man – an adventurer, hunter, athletic, rugged, the scent of the wild rested upon him. Most men would relate to Esau much more than they would his younger brother Jacob – a tent dweller, domestic, momma’s boy. Esau was named, “Red.” Jacob was named, “Deceiver.”
Red was a strong man, but he had a weak will – he didn’t consider longevity and legacy. Jacob bartered a cup of pottage for Red’s birthright – the Patriarchal Blessing.
Red couldn’t see past the next meal. His appetite controlled him. Red’s stomach became his god.
Their destiny is destruction, their god is their stomach, and their glory is in their shame. Their mind is set on earthly things. – Philippians 3:19
Within the heart of man is the Seat of Appetites – which is the core of what motivates him, moves his decisions and decides his emotions.
Jesus revealed his mastery after fasting for 40 days and nights in the wilderness and Satan tempted him with a grand bargain – turn the rocks into loaves of bread. Jesus response is classic, “Man shall not live on bread alone.”
