Day 193: Don’t Blow Up

Proverbs 12:15

Fools have short fuses and explode all too quickly; the prudent quietly shrug off insults.

Principle

When you know the source of insults is a fool, it’s easy to shrug it off.

I grew up under my mother’s second husband. Ted was a hothead. He would explode in anger. He used his anger to manipulate and control my mother. He would throw his juvenile tantrums, slam his fist against the wall, and lash out with curses.

Even as a child and especially as a teenager, I had a unique way of responding to his foolishness – I quietly shrugged off his temper as amusement. I knew this was not a stable, rational, or smart man. I developed a strong sense of security in my own right. Although his verbal assaults were daily, I brushed them off.

When you know the source of insults is a fool, it’s easy to shrug it off.

Unfortunately, I’ve seen leaders use these same tactics on the job. Using this kind of sophomoric behavior is beneath authentic manhood.

Let’s lead by inspiration, not intimidation. Let’s master communication skills and draw upon a person’s gift. We will accomplish greater things using wisdom rather than exploding in violent rhetoric.

Neil, these are great dailies. Thanks for making these available to men. May the Lord continue to give increase in all that you do.
