Day 197: Involve God In Your Work

Proverbs 16:11

God cares about honesty in the workplace; your business is his business.

Principle

Our business is God’s business.

A FivestarMan is entrepreneurial – he brings to market his ability and skill to produce. He cultivates with his hands – everything that his hand touches prospers. He involves God in his work.

Some men try to segregate their work from their faith. They justify their dishonesty as “business.” That’s not how God sees it. Our business is His business. There’s no separation. He is involved in what we do.

Joseph is an excellent example of a man who was notably blessed in all of his business affairs. So much so that Potiphar knew that his household was prosperous because of Joseph’s integrity. If you read the story too quickly, you won’t catch this unique statement, “The Lord was with Joseph, and he prospered, and he lived in the house of his Egyptian master.” (Genesis 39:2)

The common misunderstanding of prosperity would cause us to stumble over this statement. The word prosper means to “advance, make progress, succeed, be profitable.” This means that Joseph was caused to thrive even while he was enslaved. Even while Joseph was enslaved, he prospered. Joseph performed his master’s business with excellence and integrity. He worked as if his work was for God. He didn’t justify doing things slothfully because he was enslaved.

I remember when I first started involving God in my business. I don’t want to embarrass the cause of Christ because my work isn’t a good example of Him. I want my work to reflect my faith.

Servants, respectfully obey your earthly masters but always with an eye to obeying the real master, Christ. Don’t just do what you have to do to get by, but work heartily, as Christ’s servants doing what God wants you to do. And work with a smile on your face, always keeping in mind that no matter who happens to be giving the orders, you’re really serving God. Good work will get you good pay from the Master, regardless of whether you are slave or free. (Ephesians 6:5-8)
