Day 208: Pleasant Fragrance
Proverbs 27:9
Perfume and incense bring joy to the heart, and the pleasantness of a friend springs from their heartfelt advice.
Principle
Good advice from honest friends is like a fragrance – lingering in the air and reminding us of them.
I tend to have a hypersensitivity to smells. As I travel, staying in a hotel room that has not been thoroughly cleaned becomes challenging. I pick up the residue of the presence of others. I try not to be obsessive about it, but it makes me keenly aware of the impression that lingers long after our presence has departed.
That’s the sense that I get when reading today’s Proverb. The remembrance of good advice leaves on a person is equated to a pleasant fragrance that lingers long after they are no longer present.
The Apostle Paul said that Christ’s offering himself was like a fragrant offering to God – the lingering aroma of sacrifice lingers for us – reminding our Heavenly Father of the acceptable sacrifice that pleased God. (Read Ephesians 5:2)
Paul also encourages us that financial gifts have a fragrance. They are also considered a sacrifice that is pleasing and acceptable to God.
