Proverbs 25:26

A person without self-control is like a city with broken-down walls.

Mastering oneself is the greatest defense.

The greatest threat to your own life and the protection of your family is the man that you see in the mirror. Unfortunately, men can be their own worst enemy.

Self-control is so important for us that this attribute is included in the nine fruits of the Holy Spirit. If self-control is that important then we must give it some serious consideration and heed the warning that without it, we’re completely vulnerable to destruction.

The Apostle Paul says that one of the signs of the end times is that men are without self-control — he lists it with other damaging and abusive behaviors.

Actually, one of the rights of passage into adulthood is when a young man is able to control himself and not act like a child — when he no longer talks like a child, reasons like a child, and emotionally reacts like a child. When a boy can conduct his behavior with self-denial, he has matured.

Periodically, I will fast certain foods or habits to practice self-control. I want to submit my flesh to my determined will. It has helped me tremendously from time to time to give up for a season things that I may enjoy – things like golf, coffee, certain foods.

The message bible has some really bad translations. Its not even close to what its supposed to be. I encourage all readers to check other bibles to get a better understanding of what is being said.

Doug, As you know, the Message is a paraphrase. We use a variety of translations and link to the Message for men to develop the habit of reading Proverbs. Thanks for your input.
