Day 324: Charming Snakes

Proverbs 20:19

A gossip goes around telling secrets,
so don’t hang around with chatterers.

Principle

A gossip uses the magical murmuring of a snake charmer.

Historically, cities were built with high walls and strong gates. The elders and influencers of a city would gather at the city gates to see who was coming in to do business. The elders were the “gatekeepers.”

In the early design of American cities, the architects built the city around a square. The square became the center of commerce, civic activities, and conversation. The influencers would gather at the square to know what was happening in the city.

In recent years, we have ushered in a remarkable new avenue to encounter people—social media has become a gate for social discourse.

I embrace social media because it allows us to enter people’s worlds in a way that no other avenue would give us. I’ve seen the positive happen because of the connectivity of social media platforms. FivestarMan is constantly using these platforms to expand our voices and raise the volume of authentic manhood.

However, as good as these platforms can be, they can also be horrific when misused. The most common misuse is gossip. People traffic in slander can cause irreparable harm to the injured person.

The word gossip is the magical murmuring of a charmer of snakes. That’s a spiritually descriptive picture of a manipulative person whispering their damaging accusations against another person.

Remember:

As men, let's use our voices to raise the volume of authentic manhood, rather than use it to tear others down. Avoid godless chatter. Click To Tweet
