Day 332: Survivor

Proverbs 28:26

If you think you know it all, you’re a fool for sure; real survivors learn wisdom from others.

Principle

If you’re the smartest man in the room, you need a new crowd.

My wife, Kay, and I enjoy the dynamics and mind games of the reality show, Survivor. It’s one of the most intriguing and ingenious social games that has ever been played. Human nature is revealed—lying versus loyalty—integrity versus immorality. Add the incredible physical challenges and lack of food, and you’ve got an amazing dynamic at work in the contestants.

But let’s enlarge our conception of the game called Survivor. The earth is a secluded island in the universe, and we’re doing life with a population of unique characters, each with their own story and diverse in their moral compass, navigating to get to the end.

In every season of Survivor, there is a “know-it-all” on the island—the one who thinks that they are superior to all others in the game. The know-it-all boasts and acts as if they’re going to dominate everyone, only to find themselves blindsided by their ignorance—voted off the island.

I’ve seen this happen in life as well. Those who are arrogant think they are the smartest man in the room. They walk puffed up and with the stride of self-assurance. However, before they know it, someone has outwitted, outplayed, and outlasted them.

The key to winning this reality game is to learn from previous players. Take the lessons others have learned the hard way and apply them to your game. That’s wisdom.

My wife and I really enjoy survivor. This is a great devotion for today. I want to surround myself with wisdom. Though I have been a Christian for many years there is so much I can learn from others. Thankful for your ministry.
