Day 34: Earn a Reputation

Proverbs 3:4

Earn a reputation for living well in God’s eyes and the eyes of the people.

Principle

A reputation is the shadow that character casts.

Our Advisor tells us to earn a reputation. That’s a great way of saying it because, as Henry Ford said, “A man can’t build a reputation on what he is going to do.”

We live in a time of masterful marketing and fame building; however, when we peel back the curtains we often find that the marketing is a cover for flawed character and the fame is fleeting. Few people realize the value of true character and how it will reflect a reputation in God’s eyes and in the eyes of people.

Jesus taught what I call the closet principle:

But when you pray, go into your room, close the door and pray to your Father, who is unseen. Then your Father, who sees what is done in secret, will reward you. – Matthew 6:6

This is how we gain favor with God – we do things that no one can see – and when God sees our private lives, He rewards us openly.

A good friend of mine asked me to meet with his son and give him some advice. I agreed to do so and after meeting with the young man I gave him this advice, “If you want to gain momentum in your life, don’t try to do something public, you’re not ready for it. In fact, go find everything that you can do secretly so that no one knows that you’ve done it. In other words, clean your closet. What you do in secret will gain you momentum in public.”

He followed my advice and within months had turned things around and saw incredible growth in his efforts.

What you do in secret is what moves you in public. Click To Tweet
