How to Turn Your Someday into Now

Life’s tough, right? We dream big, but too often those dreams stay stuck in “someday.” As men of faith, the Bible shows us how to turn dreams into real steps. Proverbs 16:9 says, “We make our plans, but the Lord guides our steps.” Goal setting isn’t about doing it alone—it’s about lining up with God’s plan, from big dreams down to what you do right now.

I’ve mentored guys at FivestarMan for years, helping them live like strong, real men based on the Bible. My tool, “Goal Setting to the Now,” starts with your big dream and breaks it into simple actions. It’s like Habakkuk 2:2: “Write the vision plainly so you can run with it.” Let’s go through it step by step. Think of it like Joshua claiming the Promised Land—look far ahead, but fight today’s fight. This works for faith, work, family, or health.

1. Someday Goal: What’s one thing you want to do someday?

Start with the big picture. What’s that huge goal in your heart? It’s your legacy, like God showing Abraham the stars for his family line (Genesis 15:5). Pick one bold thing.

For me, it was starting FivestarMan to help men everywhere. Yours could be writing a book, building a business, or leading your family strong in faith. Write it down simple. Submit it to God: “If You want this, Lord, make it happen for Your glory” (James 4:13-15).

Why start here? Without a big goal, your days just drift. It fires you up, like the fire pillar guiding the Israelites (Exodus 13:21). It’s about faith that lasts forever.

2. Five-Year Goal: Based on your someday goal, what’s one thing you can do in the next five years?

Zoom in now. Pick one step for the next five years. It’s like David going from shepherd boy to warrior in Saul’s army (1 Samuel 16-18).

If your big goal is a ministry, maybe finish Bible school and start a small group in five years. For money freedom, pay off debts and save. Make it clear and doable. Ecclesiastes 3:1 says there’s a time for everything—so plant seeds now.

This gets you moving. Five years is close enough to feel real, but long enough for big change. Pray: “God, guide my steps” (Psalm 37:23). No excuses, man—pick one thing and go.

3. One-Year Goal: Based on your five-year goal, what’s one thing you can do this year?

Get closer. Break it into one year. It’s like the seasons in the Bible—plant, grow, harvest (Genesis 8:22). Paul pushed forward yearly, aiming for the prize (Philippians 3:14).

If five years is a degree, this year finish the first classes strong. For health, drop 20 pounds and hit the gym regular. Keep it to one thing for focus.

A year feels familiar—think New Year’s or birthdays. But it’s about using time wisely. Jesus prayed for daily bread (Matthew 6:11), but planned ahead too. Check in every few months: On track? God directs like a river (Proverbs 21:1).

4. Monthly Goal: Based on your one-year goal, what’s one thing you can do this month?

Now dig in. A month is 30 days of hard work, like the moon cycles God made (Psalm 104:19). Nehemiah rebuilt walls month by month—gather, build, fight (Nehemiah 2-6).

From your year goal, pick one task this month. If the year is Bible reading, do the first five books now. For work, meet five key people.

You see results fast here, which keeps you going. It’s like tasting God’s goodness (Psalm 34:8). At month’s end, think: What went well? Ask for God’s help. This builds good habits.

5. Weekly Goal: Based on your monthly goal, what’s one thing you can do this week?

Weeks have God’s beat—work six days, rest one (Exodus 20:8-11). Jesus taught and healed in weekly bursts.

Take your month goal and make one weekly move. If the month is fitness, do three workouts and plan meals this week. For faith, lead a family talk.

It’s easy to handle a week. Short enough to push through junk, long enough for progress. Like the ant saving food (Proverbs 6:6-8). Plan Sundays, check Fridays. Tell a buddy—men sharpen each other (Proverbs 27:17).

6. Daily Goal: Based on your weekly goal, what’s one thing you can do today?

Today counts. God’s mercy is new each morning (Lamentations 3:22-23). Jesus said, “Work while it’s day” (John 9:4).

From the week, pick one thing today. If writing, do 500 words now. For family, encourage your wife.

This beats feeling stuck—one step at a time. Hear God’s voice today (Hebrews 3:15). Pray in the morning, thank Him at night. Small wins add up big.

7. Right Now Goal: Based on your daily goal, what’s one thing you can do right now?

No waiting. Use every chance (Ephesians 5:16). Be strong—act now (Joshua 1:9).

If today is exercise, grab your shoes. If prayer, do it. This turns talk into action. It’s not your strength—it’s God’s Spirit (Zechariah 4:6).

Man, this isn’t just a list—it’s walking with God from dream to now. Start, and He’ll guide you.
